It was Ariane Noelle Patterson's 21st birthday, and she was grateful to be alive.

The Gardner-Webb University student took to her Twitter account on Jan. 17 and posted the message: "Thank you God for another year of life."

Hours later, she collapsed during a religion class and was rushed to nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead, the Associated Press reports.

The senior at the North Carolina Christian college was originally from Delaware and majored in religious studies, the Gaston Gazette reports. She had recently obtained a work-study position managing multimedia for campus ministries.

The cause of her death is still under investigation. The university released the following statement on its Facebook page:

We are deeply saddened and in shock by this monumental loss. We pray for Ariane's family and friends during this difficult time, and hope they will somehow find peace in the midst of this tragedy. No words can truly express how we collectively feel as a university during this time.

While the school encouraged students to write memories of Patterson on its Facebook page, at least two classmates shared their thoughts on their student blogs.

One friend wrote:

I write songs, and when Ariane found out, we bonded because of this common love. She was a very talented rapper, and I had every intention of having her freestyle on the next thing I recorded (even though my music is far from hip-hop :) She was just that good.

Another peer acknowledged he had never met Patterson in person, but recalls her cheerful character:

Her presence on the quad and at certain events I attended was joyous and positive...I bet she got the greatest birthday present of all-time. To make it to heaven with our heavenly father.

A prayer service will be held at noon on Jan. 20 at the university's Paul Porter Arena, WBTV reports.

Singing legend Etta James dies at 73

(CNN) -- Etta James, whose assertive, earthy voice lit up such hits as "The Wallflower," "Something's Got a Hold on Me" and the wedding favorite "At Last," has died, according to her longtime friend and manager, Lupe De Leon. She was 73.

She died from complications from leukemia with her husband, Artis Mills, and her sons by her side, De Leon said.

She was diagnosed with leukemia in 2010, and also suffered from dementia and hepatitis C. James died at a hospital in Riverside, California. She would have turned 74 Wednesday.

"This is a tremendous loss for the family, her friends and fans around the world," De Leon said. "She was a true original who could sing it all -- her music defied category. "I worked with Etta for over 30 years. She was my friend and I will miss her always."

The powerhouse singer, known as "Miss Peaches," lived an eventful life. She first hit the charts as a teenager, taking "The Wallflower (Roll With Me, Henry)" -- an "answer record" to Hank Ballard's "Work With Me, Annie" -- to No. 1 on the R&B charts in 1955. She joined Chess Records in 1960 and had a string of R&B and pop hits, many with lush string arrangements. After a mid-decade fade, she re-emerged in 1967 with a more hard-edged, soulful sound.

Throughout her career, James overcame a heroin addiction, opened for the Rolling Stones, won six Grammys and was voted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Despite her ups and downs -- including a number of health problems -- she maintained an optimistic attitude.

"Most of the songs I sing, they have that blue feeling to it. They have that sorry feeling. And I don't know what I'm sorry about," she told CNN's Denise Quan in 2002. "I don't!"

Through it all, she was a spitfire beloved by contemporaries and young up-and-comers.

"Etta James is unmanageable, and I'm the closest thing she's ever had to a manager," Lupe DeLeon, her manager of 30-plus years, told CNN in admiration.

British songstress Adele named James as one of her favorite singers, along with Aretha Franklin.

"If you were to look up the word singer in the dictionary, you'd see their names," Adele said in an interview.

Etta James was born Jamesetta Hawkins in Los Angeles to a teen mother and unknown father. (She suspected her father was the pool player Minnesota Fats.)

Her birth mother initially took little responsibility and James was raised by a series of people, notably a pair of boardinghouse owners. But she was recognized from a young age for her booming voice, showcased in a South Central Los Angeles church.

In 1950, her mother took her to San Francisco, where James formed a group called the Peaches. Singer Johnny Otis, best known for "Willie and the Hand Jive," discovered her and had her sing a song he wrote using Ballard's tune as a model. "The Wallflower," with responses from "Louie Louie" songwriter Richard Berry, made James an R&B star.

Her signing to Chess introduced her to a broader audience, as the record label's co-owner, Leonard Chess, believed she should do pop hits. Among her recordings were "Stormy Weather," the Lena Horne classic originally from 1933; "A Sunday Kind of Love," which dates from 1946; and most notably, "At Last," a 1941 number that was originally a hit for Glenn Miller.

James' version of "At Last" starts out with swooning strings and the singer enters with confident gusto, dazzlingly maintaining a mood of joy and romance. Though the song failed to make the Top 40 upon its 1961 release -- though it did hit the R&B Top 10 -- its emotional punch has long made it a favorite at weddings.

James' career suffered in the mid-'60s when the British Invasion took over the pop charts and as she fought some personal demons. But she got a boost when she started recording at Rick Hall's FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. Her hits included the brassy "Tell Mama" and the raw "I'd Rather Go Blind," the latter later notably covered by Rod Stewart.

She entered rehab in the 1970s for her drug problem but re-established herself with live performances and an album produced by noted R&B mastermind Jerry Wexler. After another stint in rehab -- this time at the Betty Ford Clinic -- she made a comeback album, "Seven Year Itch," in 1988.

James mastered a range of styles -- from R&B and soul to jazz and blues -- but she was always one step behind the popular genre of the day, said Michael Coyle, a Colgate University professor who has written about jazz and R&B and reviews records for Cadence Magazine. "She never really got her moment in the sun," Coyle said.

But James soldiered on, and by the end of her life she had made so much meaningful music that she was considered a living legend. "By the mid-'90s, she's survived so long that people start to look up to her," Coyle said.

James was portrayed by pop star Beyonce in the 2008 film "Cadillac Records," about Chess. After Beyonce sang "At Last" at one of President Barack Obama's 2009 inaugural balls, James lashed out: "I can't stand Beyonce. She had no business up there singing my song that I've been singing forever." She later told the New York Daily News she was joking.

Earlier this year, news reports revealed that the singer's estate was being contested in a legal struggle between her husband, Artis Mills, and son Donto James. (Donto and her other son, Sametto, both played in her band.)

Over the years, James had her share of health problems. In the late 1990s she reportedly weighed more than 400 pounds and required a scooter to get around. In 2003 she had gastric bypass surgery and dropped more than half the weight, according to People magazine.

However, until her latest issues, James maintained a steady touring schedule and appeared full of energy even when sitting down -- as she sometimes did on stage, due to bad knees and her weight battles.

Even while sitting down, James gave it her all on stage, singing as though possessed, caressing every note like a long-lost love. If that seemed a little much to critics, well, the legendary singer had a show to put on, she told Quan.

"They said that Etta James is still vulgar," she said in the 2002 interview. "I said, 'Oh, how dare 'em say I'm still real vulgar! I'm vulgar because I dance in the chair?' What would they want me to do? Want me to just be still or something like that?

"I gotta do something."

If you've used the word "liberal" and thought it was correct to use in a negative fashion to whomever you were calling a liberal, then you're more than likely one of the following: 1) blind to real facts and don't really know politics that well, a.k.a. a political bandwagoner, or 2) a complete idiot.

By definition, liberalism is a political philosophy based on belief in progress, the essential goodness of the human race, and the autonomy of the individual and standing for the protection of political and civil liberites; specifically: such a philosophy that considers government as a crucial instrument for amelioration of social inequities (as those involving race, gender, or class).

So by definition alone, one of the greatest men to ever speak to the masses [no pun intended] Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is a liberal. Being liberal isn't bad. It just means you want progression in the way things are done in today's society. Now I know not everyone feels the same way on certain issues, and I'm not here to sway your thinking. Just pointing this out because the word is overly used as derogatory instead of being given a fair shot.

One of the greatest presidents we've ever had, John F. Kennedy, gave his definition of a liberal and said, "...someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people — their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights, and their civil liberties — someone who believes we can break through the stalemate and suspicions that grip us in our policies abroad, if that is what they mean by a 'Liberal', then I’m proud to say I’m a 'Liberal'."

Just something to think about on your day off in honor of a man who was very smart and whose eyes were open.

And now in 2012: I proudly bring to you ndoe.biz, the official site of Cleveland, Ohio hip hop artist N. Doe.

Instead of being just a blog, I've kicked it up a notch and made this the real deal. Some items are still "coming soon" such as the Store and the Forum Board, but that won't be too long from now. I'm happy to actually get things going in the right direction this time. Everything has always been "not the right time" or a long time coming, and I'm tired of being just a guy who happens to do music. And not to sound like everyone else and be cliché, but big things are on the way, this will be my year, and it all begins here.

Music is one of the most moving energies on Earth. It really moves people. Not just on a dance floor, but it can stir our emotions and affect our ways. It speaks to us. So much so, that it's been called the universal language. Not just lyrically, but it is used to reflect life and is usually very relatable. Most people put music on and get wrapped into it to be taken away to another place. Most others use it as therapy for what their life situation is at that moment. Music can trigger good or bad memories for most people as well. This piece is about a particular work that not only has done all of the above for me, but deserves its rightful respect and attention.19 years ago today on December 15, 1992, one of the most important, innovative, and influential Hip Hop albums of all time was released by Dr. Dre on the now infamous Death Row Records. This was the first album released on the then-rookie record label. I was an 8 year old 4th grader at the time of its release. Months earlier, I had written a "what do you want to be when you grow up and why" paper. In mine I explained that I wanted to be a rapper, and I got laughs in the lunchroom and the playground over my career choice from some fellow students. Over that summer, I began writing my own rap songs and haven't quit since. When "The Chronic" was released, I had gotten my cassette of it 10 days later for Christmas. I popped it into my boombox, hooked up my headphones, hit play, and for the next hour I was in California. At this time, the Los Angeles riots were still fresh in everyone's minds. The news stations were riddled with videos of gang violence, mostly the Bloods and the Crips in California. And 2 of my favorite Hip Hop artists, Eazy-E and Dr. Dre, were having financial and business issues with each other, leading to the release of this album.The words that came through my headphones told stories about these times. The sound of the music was something new and became the new blueprint for those making rap music. In the years since, people have turned to this album to create beats as good as he produced and figure out what it takes to create timeless Hip Hop. "The Chronic" is filled with live instrumentation and interpolates mostly '70s and some early '80s funk, creating within itself a new branch of the Hip Hop genre known as G-Funk. After Side B of the cassette of "The Chronic" came to an end on my boombox, I was filled with more inspiration to continue to chase my dream of becoming a Hip Hop artist myself. If you have never heard the album, I suggest purchasing it and giving it a listen. It's extremely mind blowing and is still as good almost 2 decades later as it was when it was released.

"The Chronic Reloaded" was always this concept I had in my mind. I always wanted to do a CD with all Dr. Dre beats, or just that Dre sound. I wanted to do this CD and make it good. I had a TON of beats picked out for this, but for me to write songs to, I just couldn't use them all. Or see how they would fit into the story. This isn't your average CD or mixtape. This is a concept album. The CD came back into my thought process back in October. It starts off with me losing my job [based on reality], then becoming Mr. Don't Give A Fuck, smoking, drinking, partying, not caring. You will hear that throughout the first half of the CD. And then you will hear me change from that to realizing that that type of lifestyle is pointless, so I mature and have a conscience about everything. By the end of the CD, I would have cleaned up my act and the end result is I check myself in to detox. Here's more of an inside look at the tracks:1. Intro - I basically just took different elements of tracks and put them together to get you into that old Chronic mood. I think once you turn on the CD, this pulls you into it.

2. The Chronic Reloaded - I needed an older Dre track to start my CD off, one that hit hard, one that I can come raw on, and the Deep Cover track was it, so I picked it.

3. Job [Interlude] - This is a re-enactment of me losing my job toward the end of last year. This starts the story off.

4. 4 Hours - This is an unreleased Dre track [possibly for the original Detox] that I got a hold of. I flipped it and wrote a story as a dedication to two of my closest homegirls, just check out the song.

5. Club [Interlude] - This is a re-enactment of a time I was at a club and these dudes were talking shit about me. I don't know them, and they don't know me. I wanted to highlight it because it was so ridiculous and it leads into the next song.

6. There They Go - Here's another unreleased Dre track [possibly for the original Detox] that I wanted to spit on. Each of us explain who we are and let you know what's up.

7. Set It Off - This is one of the club tracks for this CD. It's a hot beat and I always wanted to rhyme on it.

8. Tha Drinkin' Song 2 - This is a hot Scott Storch track that I got. I wanted to re-do the whole drunk story song, but I wanted to make this hotter than the first version [on my last CD] and I think I acheived that.

9. Me And U - This track is a cool story telling track where I talk about a married woman who wants me sexually, and the things she does to keep me around.

10. Morning [Interlude] - Just make sure you listen to "Me And U" before you listen to this one haha.

11. Mufucka - This is one of my personal favorites. It's just cool wordplay and a really fun track.

12. Trip [Interlude] - This came about when my homie T.R.I.P. called me one day and asked me a really random question. I told him we gotta re-do this as a skit. It leads into the next song and story.

13. Ride And Smoke - A real laid back track that you can play in your car and ride slow, one of my favorites.

14. Straight To The Bank - I heard this joint early and thought it was just bananas, so I jumped on it right away.

15. Word [Interlude] - A snippet of Dave Chappelle speaking on a very hot topic in America today.

16. Nigga - This track was originally intended to be on the last CD [when it was the double disc idea] and it didn't make it, but I saved it for this CD. It definitely fits. It's an Irv Gotti track and I sampled N.W.A's "Niggaz 4 Life" track for the hook. Very serious track for me.

17. Been There, Done That - I've always loved this track and wanted to rhyme on it. Now I have and I had plenty to say. One of my other favorites.

18. Thinking [Interlude] - My thoughts in my head about stopping this party lifestyle and getting serious about mine.

19. Grown Man Bidness - Hot track produced by Dre. Me and X lay it down and handle the youngins.

20. 20 Something - I took Jay-Z's track and flipped it as a message to those in my age group. Check this one out.

21. Out Here - This is a one verse wonder and I basically just wanted to send a message out to my true hip hop heads in the city. You know who you are, so listen to it, and get at me.

22. The One - This was my mind rambling line to line about various topics I wanted to touch on. Another personal favorite.

23. B Alright - I had something to get off my chest, so I did. A dedication to the people who call themselves friends. Check it out.

24. Imagine - I loved this track and I felt like I had something to add. A very deep verse on my end. Another favorite of mine.

25. Outro - The end. Or the beginning of something new? Make sure you listen to this one.

What's up? Long time no see. My bad. Just been going through life getting everything situated. Anyway, hope you enjoyed the new track. If you haven't heard it, it's probably playing right now on the page as you read this. I came here to let you know that the label is actually starting to lift off the ground.

The first album release, and not mixtape release, is also the debut album from my homie Not Nathan. This album is straight classic. How can I be sure? Well, because it has all the elements. A classic album captures the time and mood of its era. This album deals with such issues as the war in Afghanistan, the debt and money crises in the U.S., and so on.

Thought-provoking songs are key to making a classic record. And trust me, this album is full of rhymes that provoke your mind to think. A classic album evokes strong emotions. This cat is extremely passionate about the way he spits his lyrics and about the topics he chooses to write about. A classic album is a sonic revolution. I know that sounds like the title of an upcoming "Sonic The Hedgehog" game [what's up Charles Hamilton! Get at me!], but it's not what I mean. This album has its own sound and own unique vibe when it comes to the beats, that it may be the way Hip Hop producers should be producing records in the near future if Hip Hop is going to survive.

Last but not least, a classic album gives us a glimpse into the reality of the artist. Not Nathan isn't just a rapper, he takes you on a journey into his life, and into his mind, so you know the thoughts of a man, not just a character. He doesn't go around popping bottles and throwing money, nor does he go around slapping women and shooting in the club.

This album is extremely worth your time and worth the space on your PC, iPod, iPhone, whatever.

Last night, I performed "Hunt These Clowns" featuring the forever wonderful Ms. Moone during her set at the Ladies Of The Land Show. Thanks again for showing me love and giving me the opportunity to rock it with you.

It was also very good to see people show love to the Cleveland Hip Hop scene. The crowd was a very decent size, despite the weather being snowy and icy. Shout outs to the entire L.O.L. collective also, they had it jumping the entire night.

NEW YORK – A law enforcement official says the celebrity disc jockey known as DJ AM has been found dead in a New York City apartment.

The official tells The Associated Press that 36-year-old Adam Goldstein was found in the Manhattan apartment Friday evening. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because family hadn't been notified.

The death comes a year after Goldstein survived a plane crash that killed four other people in South Carolina.

Goldstein was a deejay for hire who performed at Hollywood's most exclusive parties. He was also known for relationships with Nicole Richie and Mandy Moore.

There have been some things going on for me lately.

1: I started a new gig at my job, and it's cool so far.

2: I've been working out again. I'm just trying to slim back down to somewhere relatively close to where I was about 4 years ago. Plus I have a gym and a pool in my building, I have no excuse NOT to use these facilities.

3: It seems that the radio station is unfortunately running into another road block. There's this Performance Rights Act bill that Congress is trying to get passed. If it does, little guys like myself and Rico Suave are going to be forced to PAY record companies to play THEIR music, and we obviously don't have cake like that. About Last Night...

It was Rico Suave's 25th birthday yesterday, and we had a fun time all day and night. Something disturbed me last night though. We wound up at a strip club, and this one stripper came out to Kanye's "Heartless" song. I actually got up and walked out of the club. It just threw me off and made me go "What the fuck?! Who strips to that?!" It's just weird to hear songs with meaning being played in a strip club. I guess it could have been worse. My homie T.R.I.P. had a similar situation a few years ago, when a stripper danced to "Never Let Me Down" by Kanye and Jay-Z. These girls need to get their minds right and pick songs that are more appropriate for what they're playing them for.

Rock Hall Inductions

SAN FRANCISCO - A California man has been arrested for arranging for his 14-year-old daughter to marry a neighbor in exchange for $16,000, 100 cases of beer and several cases of meat, police said.

Authorities in Greenfield, a farming community on California's central coast, said they learned of the deal after Marcelino de Jesus Martinez, 36, asked them for help getting back his daughter after payment wasn't made.

Martinez was arrested Sunday. He's scheduled to be arraigned in Monterey County Superior Court on felony charges of procuring a child under age 16 for lewd and lascivious acts, statutory rape and cruelty to a child by endangering health, according to the prosecutor.

Police also arrested the intended groom, 18-year-old Margarito de Jesus Galindo, on suspicion of statutory rape, but prosecutors have not decided whether to charge him. Police did not return a message Tuesday for information on whether Galindo had an attorney.

NBC News' Dara Brown reported that the deal specifically involved 100 cases of Corona beer, 50 cases of Modelo, six bottles of wine, 50 cases of soft drinks and 50 cases of Gatorade.

Police learned of the deal in mid-December, when Martinez reported his daughter as a runaway. Further investigation found the girl had not fled but moved in with Galindo as part of the marriage arrangement. Grebmeier said the girl was a willing party to the deal.

Martinez would face at least a year in prison if convicted. Because he's an undocumented immigrant, he's under an immigration hold and is not eligible for bail.

50 Cent vs Lil Wayne? [Downloads included]

This question has been lingering for well over a year, but it still remains:
Is there really a beef between 50 Cent and Lil Wayne?
And more recently: is this a battle that you would be interested in seeing?

It seems likely that this may be coming to a head VERY soon. A few statements have been made, then later denied, and as of late it seems to be heating up a little more as lyrical jabs have been thrown.

It started in the summer of 2007 when 50 was on Funkmaster Flex's show and said the following:
"A whore sleeps with whoever pays them. So we gotta call him a whore 'cause he will just go with whoever pays him to be on a record."

Fif then went on to question Wayne's sexuality, due to the infamous pic of him kissing "his daddy," fellow artist and Cash Money co-founder Birdman.

Later 50 released a track called "Part Time Lover" and in the first verse he takes a shot at them because of the picture.

Then Weezy leaked out music to quench everyone's thirst for Tha Carter III, and one song entitled "Gossip" had fans questioning if there was beef, thinking he was taking subliminal shots at 50.

MTV stirred the controversy after dubbing Lil Wayne the top rapper of today in a list of 100 current artists. Namely, this list struck a nerve with 50, who told MTV:
"You got other artists that are there that haven't even made their own records. The #1 artist, tell me his first single off of his last album."
When the interviewer was unable to name Lil Wayne's first single, 50 then retorted:
"How you #1 and no one knows the record?"

Not too long later, Fif revealed that some of the animosity he's put forth on records was due to that list:
"People thought I had problems with Lil Wayne. I don't have problems with that little nigga. I like him. I like his music. When I have a record that's about to go on sale, and you decide that you want to point out who's the most effective artist, and I clearly been dominating, and I'm #8?"

Wayne said the feeling was mutual and that he's never had a problem with 50 Cent:
"That nigga's crazy, I ain't fucking with 50. He's too high up there. That's my nigga, though. I respect that my name even came out the homie's mouth. I just took it as a compliment. I would never go back at 50; he's a trillionaire. I'm trying to get there, homie. I'm smart. I ain't dumb."

But now it seems as if all that is out the window. Wayne recently recorded and released a track called "Louisianimal" and gets at 50 for a few bars.

50 had this to say in a recent interview on Shade 45:
"Think about it, no one from his camp said it was a leak. We could assume it was leaked, but he's a celebrity. If it was a leak, he would come out and say something. It doesn’t matter if it’s old or not. Now I know how you feel. I'll leave it like it is right now and wait till I'm comfortable and then I’ll do what I do."

Well, 50 did what he does and put out "Play This On The Radio" and calls out Wayne directly after his verse. He even references the lines from Weezy's track while calling him out.

Personally, I'm kind of interested in this battle. Why? Because, I've been getting alot of music lately, and every track I've gotten by 50, he's been coming with that pre-Get-Rich-Or-Die-Tryin' flow and it's about damn time! Then there's Wayne, who is all over the music industry right now, which is cool that he's getting his money, yet, most people I know are sick of him. But then on the other hand, maybe this is that challenge that Wayne needs to step his lyric game up too. So it would be interesting to see a battle happen.
